Technology companies are becoming a major spotlight in our society today. Because of this, companies such as Pinterest have taken note of the diversity problem that we face, and have created a special position within the company. Pinterest titles this position as “Chief Diversity Officer” and has announced their first head of Diversity to be a woman by the name of Candice Morgan. They have also announced that they will launch two initiatives that would introduce more engineers from underrepresented or unrepresented backgrounds into the field of technology. Pinterest has also created a program called “Pinterest Engage” that is designed to target college students that are considering computer science as their major. Pinterest’s co-founder, Evan Sharp, said “Our vision at Pinterest is to build a product that inspires everyone. To make this happen, we need to understand the perspectives and needs of people around the world.”
Soon after Pinterest, social media network, Twitter, also announced that they had hired Jeffrey Siminoff into a similar position with their company. Facebook soon followed with an announcement that they would be doing extensive training to help manage unconscious biases that may lead to discrimination in the hiring process.
Although many companies don’t tend to move as quickly without being prodded by civil rights activists and their followers, bigger companies such as those discussed and others such as Google are starting to make changes. Although some are making bigger changes than others, any company that is headed in the right direction by introducing more diversity is a good thing…
